August 15, 2011 - Haverstraw, NY to Port Jefferson, NY

On the way out of Haverstraw Marina, we see an unbelievable 80+ foot sport fisherman.Check out the guy climbing down from the Texas Tower to get some perspective of its size.

It's another cloudy rainy day, after torrential rain last night, as we head south on the Hudson River. Lots of barge traffic, more than we've ever seen on the river south of the TZ Bridge. We caught a break with the tides coming through Hell's Gate and coast on the current out to LI Sound. The winds were calm but it appeared that the storm last night must have riled up the ocean and we encountered large rolling waves from the east of about 5' - 6' in height, and close together.

Leaving Haverstraw, NY on a cloudy day

We planned to stay at a slip right in town since we were meeting Roy and Loretta Montana for dinner. However, el bandito lives in Port Jeff and they wanted $6 per foot for the overnight and $25 for shore power, the highest anywhere on the trip.

Launch for the Mooring field

Instead we took a mooring with launch service for $50 and free Wi-Fi. Met the Montanas who were returning from Michigan that afternoon and went to "Pasta Pasta" a wonderful Italian restaurant for a great meal and conversation well into the night. Back to the boat and review of more gloomy weather forecasts for tomorrow, so an early start.
